Parent Letter of Recommendation:
Mr. Gustavo Ortega is an exceptional person. He's helpful and kind and very generous with his efforts towards all kids, especially those with ASD and special needs. I recommend Mr. Ortega for the school board. He would do an incredible job representing the ASD and special needs community. I have a 4th grade special needs daughter and she is doing great due to Mr. Ortega's work as a teacher with her, continuous friendship, mentoring, love and involvement in her life. He has a passion for working with special needs kids and advocating for their rights. He also has a great deal of passion for everything he puts his heart into, including being a teacher, father, baseball coach, friend, community member, and just all around great person. I thank Mr. Ortega for his commitment to this community and making it a better place, and especially advocating for our kids with special needs in the school system. He has knowledge of the inner workings of the system, and he would be a benefit to advocate for all of us he would serve.
Best,
Sharon Ellis

THERE’S MUCH TO DO!

I was born in a small town in Jalisco, Mexico, where education was not a priority. During my early years of elementary school, the teacher only came two to three times per week to educate us. However, I was fortunate to immigrate to America at the age of 9, and it was here that my education journey truly began. I not only graduated from high school but also went on to attain a master’s degree in special education. Ever since then, my professional career has revolved around education and my students. Currently, I have the privilege of teaching children with autism, kindergarteners, and 1st graders, and I absolutely love it.
My personal and professional experiences have instilled in me a deep appreciation for the value of education. I firmly believe that every child, regardless of their background, deserves a high-quality education that prepares them for a bright future. As your next school board member, I will advocate for several crucial initiatives, ensuring safe learning environments, expanding PreK programs to all 3-year-olds, supporting teacher retention, and fostering community involvement to help our students flourish. Having devoted my life to public education, I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to serve children and families beyond my own classroom. Together, let's work towards a brighter and more equitable future for all our students.
Gustavo, a dedicated special education teacher with more than 15 years of experience, aspires to transform Miami-Dade Schools into a national model to be emulated across the entire educational landscape.
